The Muslim Council in Adamawa State officially presented the 1448 AH Islamic Calendar in a ceremony held on Saturday at the council’s secretariat in Yola, the state capital.
The ceremony was graced by Islamic scholars, government officials, and traditional rulers from within and outside Adamawa state.
In his message, the special guest of honor, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu Prambe, explained that the calendar will serve as a tool to ensure uniformity in the conduct of Islamic festivities and other activities.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Muslim Council of Adamawa State, Malam Gambo Jika commended the state government and traditional institutions for their continuous support to the council’s activities.
He also called on politicians and their supporters to conduct their political activities peacefully and responsibly in the 2027 general elections.
On his part, the Chairman of the occasion, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Professor Ibrahim Umar, lauded the council’s commitment of annual presentation of the Islamic calendar, noting that it serves as an essential guide for the Muslim Ummah.
Professor Umar reminded eligible voters in the state on the need to elect credible leaders capable of delivering dividends of democracy as the 2027 general elections approaches.
He urged those who have voter’s card to take advantage of the extension of the voter registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, called on the Muslim Council to intensify public enlightenment on the importance of voter registration.
The guest speaker at the event who is the National President of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, Professor Bashir Aliyu Umar, who was represented by Professor Muhammad Alh. Abubakar of the Faculty of Law University of Maiduguri, delivered a lecture on Islamic principles of leadership and the process of choosing leaders.
Professor Abubakar who described leadership as a critical pillar for the development of every society, emphasized that Islam places great emphasis on the electing good leaders.
He enumerated some of the essential qualities of a good leader in Islam to include honesty, justice, trustworthiness, and the fear of God.
