The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed lawyers and court officials to stop using the title “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in all official engagements with the Supreme Court, describing the practice as inconsistent with the professionalism expected at the apex court.
The directive was contained in a memorandum dated 13 July 2026, and addressed to litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars and lawyers.
The memo, signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi, said the decision takes immediate effect and applies to all official correspondence, records, documents, identity materials and other official interactions with the court.
“I am directed by the Honourable the Chief Justice of Nigeria to notify all Litigation Staff, Legal Practitioners, Court Registrars, and Lawyers that the use of the title ‘Barrister’ as a prefix to names is inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected within the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” the memo reads.
The CJN further directed all affected officers to immediately discontinue the practice across all official platforms and documents.
“Consequently, all officers concerned are hereby directed to discontinue the use of the title ‘Barrister’ before their names in all official correspondence, records, documents, identity materials, and any other official engagements with immediate effect,” the memo added.
Justice Kekere-Ekun also instructed heads of departments and unit heads to ensure strict compliance with the directive by officers under their supervision.
The latest directive is seen as part of the Supreme Court’s broader drive to strengthen professionalism and modernise judicial administration.
In recent weeks, the apex court has rolled out sweeping reforms, including the implementation of the Nigerian Case Management System (NCMS) and mandatory electronic filing of court processes, as part of efforts to improve efficiency, transparency and integrity in the administration of justice.
The CJN has repeatedly stressed that the success of the ongoing judicial reforms depends on the cooperation and professionalism of members of the legal profession, and has urged lawyers to uphold the highest ethical standards in their dealings with the courts.
