The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has said Nigerians are experiencing hardship and frustration under the administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It urged opposition leaders to unite and provide a credible political alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The caucus stated this on Tuesday in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with representatives of G-100, a group advocating stronger cooperation among opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Frederick Y. Agbedi, said the hardship confronting Nigerians should compel opposition leaders to put aside personal ambitions and work together in the national interest. “The Nigerians are seriously in pain. Nigerians are willing, Nigerians are so frustrated, and there’s no reason why our opposition voices shouldn’t stand up for Nigerians and bring support to them,” Agbedi said.
He said the meeting with G-100 was part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the Minority Caucus and the group, with both sides agreeing to work together to play a more active role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Agbedi also called on opposition stakeholders, particularly leaders of political parties and presidential aspirants, to develop a culture of cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections. “We also decided that we use this opportunity to call on all opposition stakeholders, particularly the leaders of the various parties and presidential candidates, to begin to develop the attitude of working together, such that we will be able to upset the dehumanising government of the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that we have in office today,” he said.
The Minority Leader said opposition politicians shouldn’t allow personal ambitions or party differences to undermine efforts to challenge the ruling party at the polls.
He stressed that opposition unity would be necessary to build an effective political alternative capable of addressing Nigerians’ concerns. “We’ve also used this opportunity to decide that we call on all members of the opposition, no matter the party you belong to, no matter your ambition, that there is strength in unity, and that the opposition should unite, to ensure that we wrest power from the APC in 2027,” he said.
The call came as G-100 continued its campaign for a more coordinated opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
In an open letter titled “The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition,” the group urged opposition leaders, civil society organisations, leaders of thought and Nigerians of good conscience to support the development of a strong democratic opposition capable of providing voters with a credible alternative.
G-100 argued that a divided opposition could weaken democratic accountability and called on political leaders to place national interest above personal ambitions.
The group also called for negotiations among opposition leaders towards a common purpose, programme and strategy for the 2027 elections, including the possibility of adopting a single presidential standard-bearer.
The Minority Caucus and G-100 also agreed to work toward an opposition summit scheduled for August 31, where further discussions on opposition cooperation and strategy are expected.
The summit is expected to provide a broader platform for opposition leaders and stakeholders to deliberate on the structure of their cooperation and possible strategies for the 2027 elections.
The Minority Caucus also commented on the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, commending voters for what it described as their determination to protect their democratic choice.
“Congratulations goes to the people of Osun State. Without the determination of the people, be it INEC or whoever, we wouldn’t have democracy saved in our true state,” Agbedi said.
He urged Nigerians to draw lessons from the Osun election and protect the sanctity of their votes regardless of political pressure or inducements. “And I want to use this opportunity to tell Nigerians, Osun has just shown an example. No matter what the APC is giving to you or wants to give to you, no matter how much anybody wants to compromise you, stand up to your bidding that in democracy, my vote is sacred, and you vote for your liberation,” he said.
On the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Agbedi said the commission still had more work to do to guarantee transparent and credible elections.
