The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has faulted the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, for labeling the APC governors as lazy.
Spokesperson of the Council, Ima Niboro, who spoke on Arise TV on Wednesday, maintained that governors are very popular and, by the nature of the constitution, bring changes to even the center. He wondered if Wike would say that he was lazy as a governor.
He said, “If Wike, with all due respect to him and his position and experience as a two-term governor, says a governor is lazy, then was he lazy as governor of a state? Governors are very popular, people who actually, because of the nature of our constitution, can sometimes really bring changes to even the centre. We’ve seen it before.
“I don’t consider anybody saying the APC governors are lazy. I don’t think it’s correct. I think these are just the same kind of hot epithets that are flying around. I don’t think there’s any serious consideration in that way. I saw when he talked about the president getting 10% of the votes in 2023 in Imo State, that was there. That was ‘Candidate Tinubu’, but now this is ‘President Tinubu’, who has done substantial work, especially in the Southeast. He has done quite a great number of interventions in that region. I think that it’s not the candidate Tinubu of 2023 that’s the candidate Tinubu of 2027. So, I’ll say, let’s tone down this rhetoric. It’s not leading anybody anywhere.”
The Spokesperson however, expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu would wade into the issue and ensure that the two sides who have agreed to support his reelection work together.
He said, “The ultimate beneficiary of this entire process is the president. The quarrel we’re talking about is the one percolating down to state and local government areas. Both camps agreed on re-electing the president. I don’t see it as a direct challenge to the president himself beyond the fact that he’s a leader and it’s in his interest for him to maintain the peace.
“The president is an astute, very experienced politician. I think he’s networking these people.”
Niboro noted that this is the kind of quarrel that exists in big political parties. “It’s the same kind of quarrel we saw in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Sometimes a party gets so big, it becomes its own opposition. Those days, Ogbulafor said that the PDP will rule for 60 years and there was no opposition. But PDP itself became its own opposition. That’s how you had the breakaways from PDP and all those issues led to the demise of PDP governance in this country.
“These are the issues that happen when you have big parties. It’s inevitable. They have to be managed. We have a leader who I think is competent enough to manage these things.”
