BusinessNewsEFCC Arrests Advertisement Executive in Coal City, Pulls Down Advert

ENUGU — Two billboards located at the popular Otigba and Ziks Avenue junctions in the Coal City, Enugu have been pulled down and the outdoor advertisement Executive was arrested for hosting the billboards.

The controversial message on the board bearing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s logo read “2023: Enugu PDP learn from 2007 election. EFCC is coming with koboko on corrupt candidates,” with a picture of a man wearing a jacket with the inscription ‘EFCC Nigeria’.

The official handle of the Commission states, “The two Super 48 Sheet Billboards located at Otigba and Zik Avenue junctions in Enugu, bore offensive messages using the name of the EFCC to threaten the aspiration of some politicians in the state in the build up to the 2023 general elections.”

The ‘offensive’ advertorial was on Saturday pulled down by operatives of EFCC, Enugu zonal office;

However, some concerned citizens have condemned the arrest stating that it is just a public awareness tool to caution corrupt officers.

Inibehe Effiong a Human Rights Lawyer, Activist committed to ending corruption and injustice wrote on his Facebook page condemning the arrest of the advert executive of Baronbrands.

Effiong argued that EFCC was in no way pointed to as the sponsors were boldly acknowledged as the Concerned Enugu Citizens in Scotland. Therefore he said, it is illegal, mischievous, and ridiculous for the EFCC to arrest the advertisement executive as the advert is not credited to any of their officers or the Commission.

The Human Rights Activist further argued that the message is in consonance with the war against corruption preached by the Commission, so why the arrest.

“It is therefore astonishing that a Commission that is statutorily mandated to fight corruption is now holding brief for corrupt politicians in Enugu State. No matter how we look at it, this action by the EFCC is a setback on the war against corruption and should be roundly condemned,” Effiong reiterates.
