ENUGU — The Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministry Enugu, Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has tendered a public apology to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, and his supporters over the provocative utterances he made on Wednesday against him.
The Catholic Diocese of Enugu State had, in a statement released late Thursday, disassociated itself from the inflammatory political comments, noting that Mbaka’s views on the matter are entirely personal to him and do not represent the position of the Catholic church.
Describing his political utterances as divisive and unbecoming of a priest, the church said the verbal attack breached canon 220 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law which prohibits anyone from illegitimately harming the good name of a person.
The church also warned the fiery cleric to refrain from making further provocative prophecies or utterances capable of heating up the polity.
In response to the statement by the authorities of the Enugu Catholic Diocese, Mbaka on Friday tendered an unreserved public apology to Obi and his supporters, pleading for understanding and forgiveness.
In the apology letter titled, “Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka Blesses His Excellency Peter Obi and His Supporters”, which he personally signed, the Catholic priest said his “intention is not to malign His Excellency, Peter Obi’s image, but to pray for him,” asking for God to bless him and for His will to be done in his political endeavours.
Addressing Obi supporters who have been dragging him on social media for his uncouth remarks, he stated: “In any way, the supporters of Mr Peter Obi feel offended by my utterances or however I was misunderstood by them, I ask for their understanding and forgiveness.”
While describing himself as an ardent supporter of good governance, justice, equity, love, and godliness, Mbaka gave his blessings to Obi and other presidential candidates across all political parties, remarking that “anyone who God wishes to make our leader is my choice.”
