YOLA — President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with the Government and people of Adamawa State over the passing of an illustrious son, ace broadcast/Journalist Chief Timawus Mathias.
Mathias who served the country as a broadcaster, writer, and media consultant for more than fifty years died at the age of 73 on Friday at Modibbo Adama Teaching Hospital, Yola after a protracted illness.
Buhari in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said the president shared the pain of the loss with family members, particularly his wife of close to five decades, Betty, the Hama Bachama, and the Bachama Council where he holds the title of a spokesman, friends and professional colleagues in the media.
The President extolled Chief Mathias for dedicating his life to service of the country, starting out at a young age with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, before moving to the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, and hitting the limelight with Verdict 83 in 1983.
“Multi-talented journalist, whose versatility stretched into music, contributed to the vibrancy and dynamism of Nigerian media, remaining relevant in writing columns for newspapers and treads on social media while providing expert guidance on communication to many public and private institutions,” Buhari said.
The President affirmed that the veteran journalist, who has two media stations in Yola, NTA and AIT, named after him, will always be remembered for the value he added to the lives of many, at home and abroad.
He, however, prayed to Almighty God to accept the soul of Chief Mathias and comfort his family.
Also, the Senator Representing, Adamawa Central in the National Assembly and Gubernatorial candidate in Adamawa State Sen. Aishatu Ahmed Dahiru Binani in a statement commiserated with the immediate family of Chief Timawus Mathias, the people of Adamawa and Nigerians as well as the media industry over the loss.
“It is with a heavy heart that I commiserate with the immediate family of Chief Timawus Mathias, who died today after a protracted illness”.
“Uncle Tim’s death is a personal loss and a big one for Adamawa state and Nigeria”.
“My condolences once more to his immediate family, the Bachama Traditional Council, and the good people of Adamawa state”.
“May God repose his soul and give all of us the fortitude to bear this huge loss. Ameen,” the statement reads.
Late Mathias died at the age of 73 at the Moddibo Adama University Teaching Hospital Yola after protracted illness and left behind a wife, four children, and siblings.
While Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has described late broadcast/Journalist Chief Timawus Mathias as a patriotic Nigerian who served the country diligently in various capacities.
In a statement by Wonosikou Humwashi, Chief Press Secretary to the Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Fintiri described the late ace broadcaster/Journalist as a patriotic citizen who contributed immensely to the development of his country.
The statement reads in part: “I received with shock, the news of the passing of your husband which sad event took place on Friday. Words are insufficient to condole one on the death of a loved one, but I do urge you to take solace in the life he lived. I have no doubt that Chief Mathias’ impact and reach will continue to be felt in the lives of those that have passed through his tutelage and the society at large.
“Governor Fintiri who described the demise of Chief Timawus Mathias as shocking eulogized the late veteran Journalist as a patriotic Nigerian who served the country diligently in various capacities”.
