The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the final list of presidential candidates of all the political parties contesting next year’s general election on Tuesday, 20 September 2022.

According to the list, there are 18 registered political parties, and by extension, 18 presidential candidates who are hoping to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, whose tenure would elapse on 29 May 2022.

However, though there is a level playing field for all the 18 contenders, even as campaigns have commenced, the 25 February 2023 presidential contest seems to be a four-horse race.

Political discourse among pundits, analysts, and the general public centre around these front runners.

They are former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa; a former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his running mate, Kashim Shettima.

Including a former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and his running mate, Yusuf Baba-Ahmed; and a former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and his running mate, Bishop Isaac Idahosa.

The 14 candidates overshadowed by the presidential candidates of the PDP, APC, LP, and NNPP are: Osita Nnadi, presidential candidate of Action Peoples Party (APP) and his running mate, Isa Hamisu; Abiola Kolawole, presidential candidate of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and his running mate, Zego Haruna.

Yabagi Sani, presidential candidate of Action Democratic Party (ADP) and his running mate, Udo Okoro; Ado-Ibrahim Abdulmalik, presidential candidate of Young Progressives Party (YPP) and his running mate, Enyinna Kasarachi.

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate African Action Congress (AAC) and his running mate, Garba Magashi; Oluwafemi Adenuga, presidential candidate of Boot Party (BP) and his running mate, Turaki Mustapha.

Peter Umeadi, presidential candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and his running mate, Koli Mohammed; Daberechukwu Nwanyanwu, presidential candidate of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and his running mate, Ramalan Abubakar.

Dumebi Kachikwu, presidential candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his running mate, Mohammed Ahmed; Hamza Al-Mustapha, presidential candidate of Action Aliance (AA) and his running mate, Chukwuka Johnson.

Imumolen Christopher, presidential candidate of Accord Party (AP) and his running mate, Bala Maru; Adewole Adebayo, presidential candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) and his running mate, Buhari Yusuf.

Osakwe Johnson of National Rescue Movement (NRM) and his running mate, Kyabo Muhammad; and the only female candidate in the race, Ojei Princess of Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and her running mate, Ibrahim Mohammed.
