Two weeks after the National Council for Art and Culture (NCAA) asked the House of Representatives for powers to arrest and prosecute the organisers of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) and cross-dressers, the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has thrown its weight behind the move.

MSSN comprises Muslim students from 17 southern states in Nigeria.

Qaasim Odedeji, the group’s B-zone coordinator, said the call by the director-general of the NCAA, Segun Runsewe, isn’t out of place due to the ‘growing rate of immortality in the country’. He attributed this to the effect of BBNaija, soft porn skits and cross-dressing.

“The growing rate of immortality in the country is worrisome and we can’t exonerate the effect of reality shows crammed with nudity or soft porn skits that are all over social media,” he said.

Odedeji called on the relevant authorities to accede to NCAA’s proposal, saying: “You will recall that the second stanza of the national anthem, which is now called the national prayer, says ‘Help our youth the truth to know’.

“We, therefore, call on all stakeholders; the National Assembly, the National Council for Art and Culture (NCAA), Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) to give the deserving attention to all the issues raised and help our youth know the truth.”

He added that “it is duty-bound on all well-meaning Nigerians to also join the call for this regulation before we all lose hold of the truth.”

MSSN support is coming few days after the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) showed its support for the regulation. MURIC described the BBNaija reality TV show as ‘demonic’.
