ABUJA — Jabi Lake Mall, one of the popular shopping outlets in Abuja, was on Thursday shut down indefinitely over security concerns.
The management said the “decision has been taken in the overall interest of the safety of all staff and customers of the mall.”
It said though it wasn’t its intention to disrupt activities in the mall, the “safety of our staff and shoppers remains our highest priority.”
The management apologised for the inconvenience the closure might cause to their customers, and promised to inform customers when the mall would be reopened as it is “constantly reviewing the security situation in consultation with relevant security authorities.”
There are speculations that the closure of the Jabi Lake Mall is not unrelated to the United States’ security alert about the heightened risk of terrorist attacks in the Federal Capital Territory.
“There is an elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria, specifically in Abuja. Targets may include, but are not limited to, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organizations,” the US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria had warned.
