Governor Babagana Zulum of Boko Haram-ravaged Borno State has said that about 160,000 terrorists in the State and other Northeast States have laid down their arms.
“Generally, the security situation in Borno state has improved significantly,” the Governor told a delegation of the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru and the Minister of Defence (State), Alhaji Bello Matawalle at the Government House in Maiduguri on Tuesday.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa as well as other service chiefs also accompanied the defence ministers on visit.
Zulum thanked the military for the continued onslaught on the terrorists, saying it “has led to the surrender of over 160,000 Boko Haram terrorists and their families.”
The Governor had put the figures at 140,000 and lamented the unchecked rate at which the Boko Haram jihadists were recruiting underage children as fighters in October.
“Within the last two weeks, I have gone around some nooks and crannies of the state, and reports reaching me from traditional rulers is that peace has returned to Borno state,” Governor Zulum added.
