Thirteen people suspected of being involved in banditry and kidnapping, particularly in the areas of Jalingo, Yorro, Lau, and Zing local government regions of Taraba state have been nabbed by the Police.
Commissioner of Police Joseph Eribo said this while presenting the suspects and seized items at the police headquarters in Jalingo, the state capital, on Wednesday, all suspects will face charges under the state’s anti-kidnapping law, ensuring that justice prevails.
“The suspected criminals strategically utilize nearby mountains as a cover, making rescue attempts or interventions challenging and risking collateral damage.
“Following collaborative efforts among the police, sister security agencies, vigilante officers, and professional hunters, thirteen suspects were apprehended in various parts of the state. A substantial cash ransom of over N8 million was declined as a bribe.
“Additionally, the police recovered five AK-47 rifles and five rounds of live ammunition while successfully rescuing five individuals who had been kidnapped,” he said.
According to the police, the arrests come in response to a surge in public concern regarding criminal activities which have reached an alarming level.
Among the arrested bandits, some confessed to orchestrating the kidnappings of a traditional ruler, a pastor, an imam, and a kidnapper who had collected a ransom exceeding N8 million.
The police have affirmed that all suspects will face charges under the state’s anti-kidnapping law, ensuring that justice prevails.
The commissioner of police reiterated the commitment of the command to safeguarding the lives and property of residents and expressed appreciation to the state governor, Agbu Kefas, for unwavering support to security agencies in establishing a peaceful, secure, and economically viable state.
