Ambassador Abdel Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS Commissioner of Political Affairs Peace and Security says Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso left the region to ally, which had caused set back to the regional counter Terrorism efforts, noted that creating an alliance of Sahelian states has complicated the fight against terrorism in the region.
Ambassador Musah who stated this in Abuja at a stakeholder’s Engagement on Regional Defence and Security perspectives with the theme of reducing vulnerabilities through partnerships, explained that ECOWAS was always willing to receive the countries into its community and engagements would continue to ensure their return.
He expressed concern with the existing Alliance, saying the Sahelian region remained under a serious security threat that requires wider partnership and collaboration to address.
“As a result of conflict and Terrorism, 50% of Burkina was occupied by non-state actors, a development he said was capable of escalating to other parts of the region, especially in the neighbouring states,” he said.
Ambassador Musah also stated that a physical approach had been devised to curb the growing terrorist activities in the Sahel.
The stakeholders’ engagement which brought together participants from the ECOWAS, European Union, CLEEN foundation, and Diplomatic community was aimed at analyzing the current security landscape in West Africa, including ongoing conflict and emerging threats.
