The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended 18-year-old Anichede Akachukwu, also known as “Star B”, a “notorious and most wanted” armed robber and cultist, according to a statement released by the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
Akachukwu was arrested on 17th May 2024, in Uruagu village, Oba, within the Idemili South Local Government Area (LGA).
Ikenga revealed that Akachukwu was the leader of a criminal gang terrorising not only Ogbaru LGA in Anambra but also Asaba in neighbouring Delta State.
According to the statement, acting on a tip, police apprehended Akachukwu while he was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound sustained during a previous encounter with law enforcement officials. The details of the prior incident were not disclosed.
This arrest comes amidst ongoing efforts by the Anambra State Police Command to combat violent crime.
Ikenga credited the “policing plan and model on practical intelligence, technology-driven, and tactical operations” implemented by Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam for this success.
The statement further mentioned the recovery of an operational vehicle suspected to be used by the gang in their criminal activities. Ammunition and other incriminating items were also found.
“During a search of the vehicle, the operatives found a bag and discovered 27 pieces of live 7.62m ammunition, three live cartridges, one torch light, charms and other incriminating items,” said Ikenga.
The police spokesperson also added that the suspect has provided relevant “information on their mode of operations and names of other gang members which is already aiding the ongoing investigation.”
Akachukwu’s arrest is likely to be met with relief by residents of the affected areas who have been impacted by his gang’s activities.
