The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has raised another alarm over possible river flooding on Rivers Niger and Benue and the adjoining communities.
The Annual Flood Outlook publication of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has already listed Borno, Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Yobe, Benue, Gombe, and many others states among the 31 states listed as high flood-risk areas.
Professor, Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, while addressing Journalists on Friday in Abuja said states particularly those around Rivers Niger and Benue have been placed on Red-alert to avert any damage that may be incurred from the river flooding.
He explained that with the situation in Borno which is still battling with the damage of flooding, it was time states increased their vigilance and take proactive measures to avert impending floods.
“President Bola Tinubu has provided flood intervention funds for all states to deal with flood-related issues, all states should always heed flood warnings provided to them by the ministry and be cautious of the high possibility of water borne diseases due to the floods,” he said.
He expressed sympathy to the Borno State Government and its residents, saying that it has deployed a team of technical experts from the Ministry to assess the situation in Alau Dam.
