The Nigeria Police Force has disclosed that around N9 billion was allegedly raised by unidentified groups and individuals to incite violence during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.

This revelation was made by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, during the Civil Space Guard Conference, organised by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) in collaboration with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in Abuja.

Adejobi stated that prior to the protests, the police had issued warnings regarding the possible hijack of the demonstrations by foreign mercenaries to create disorder.

He noted that the public often overlooks such warnings. “We always receive intelligence,” he said.

“I made a statement on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) that foreign elements would intervene. But due to a trust deficit, people often think we are not truthful when we make certain claims.”

He added, “While some were genuinely trying to protest and express their grievances to the government, others attempted to exploit the situation for financial gain. They indeed raised funds — we are talking about N9 billion.”

“I’m sure you were not aware that someone received that money. From that protest alone, N9 billion was generated, and the funds were actually distributed to incite chaos in Nigeria.”

The #EndBadGovernance protests, which occurred from 1 to 10 August 2024, were reportedly fuelled by the increasing cost of living.

In southern Nigeria, protests were largely peaceful; however, violence erupted in the north, leading to the destruction of public and private property.

Some northern protesters were seen waving Russian flags and calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to “intervene.”
