The Nigerian Army says it is worried about the low number of young people applying from the South East region to join the force in its 2025 recruitment exercise.
Brigadier-General Chima Ekeator, who led the Army’s recruitment awareness team to Enugu on Sunday, said while states like Kaduna had recorded over 3,000 applications, Enugu barely managed 100.
“Our people are losing what rightly belongs to them,” he said. “Each year, whenever a slot is being allocated to our people, we keep noticing that the number of applicants from our side is usually very poor.”
Ekeator insisted the opportunity was being wasted and dismissed rumours that people from the South East were deliberately sent to the frontlines.
“These things are not true,” he said. “After all, we that are here have risen high in the Army, and we are telling you that they are lies.”
Other speakers, including Commissioner for Youths Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu and traditional leaders, urged for better awareness and renewed trust in the military profession.
