Christian leaders in Plateau State have announced plans to hold a peaceful protest in Jos following a fresh wave of killings that has thrown several communities into mourning.
The protest, called the 2nd Peace Walk Against Continuous Killings, is set for Easter Monday, 21 April 2025.
According to organisers, the walk is a symbolic response to the rising number of attacks, especially in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas (LGAs).
In the early hours of Monday, gunmen reportedly stormed villages in Bassa and killed over 30 people. Just last week, more than 50 residents were murdered in similar attacks across Bokkos.
Dr Gideon ParaMallam, President of the Gideon and Funmi Peace Foundation and a member of the protest planning committee, confirmed the event.
“The protest walk will be held on Monday, April 21st, 2025 (Easter Monday), and the time for it is 9:00 a.m. prompt. The Church on the Plateau, under the leadership of the Church Denominational Leaders and the Christian Association of Nigeria, Plateau State chapter, calls on all Christians to rise once again in unity, grief, and righteous protest,” he said.
Dr ParaMallam described the killings as brutal and senseless, citing that nearly 80 people were killed in Bokkos LGA alone between 27 March and 2 April. “This does not include Bassa LGA and other parts of Nigeria,” he added.
He said the walk will begin at PRTV Roundabout in Jos and end at the New Government House, Little Rayfield, where the protesters will present their grievances to President Bola Tinubu through Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
“We must not be silent. We must not allow their blood to cry out unheard,” Dr ParaMallam stated.
The protest is being organised by the Plateau State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which has also called on churches across the state to observe Easter in mourning. Christians have been asked to wear black clothes on Easter Sunday and black, red or white clothes during the peace walk.
Explaining the colours, ParaMallam said black signifies mourning, red represents a call to end the bloodshed, and white stands for peaceful resistance to impunity.
“The protest is a call for peace, justice, and security for every life on the Plateau and across Nigeria,” he said.
