The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15th July 2025, as a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 82.

This is in continuation of the seven-day national mourning earlier declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pay tribute to the late leader who served Nigeria both as a military head of state and a democratically elected president.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Tinubu.

“The holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy in governance and national development,” the Minister stated.

He added, “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

Dr Tunji-Ojo further urged Nigerians to honour the late President’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national unity—values Buhari stood for throughout his public life.

National flags are to continue flying at half-mast across the country throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, 13th July.

Meanwhile, political parties and institutions have also taken steps to honour the late statesman.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared a three-day mourning period across all its structures nationwide. The mourning, which begins on Tuesday, 15th July, will see the suspension of all party activities and public statements.

In a press release signed by the ADC Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described Buhari as “a man who served this country with a fierce sense of duty, personal discipline, and conviction.”

He added, “Regardless of political affiliations, what cannot be denied is that President Buhari served this country with a fierce sense of duty, personal discipline, and conviction.”

“With his force of personal example, Buhari inspired millions across social divides, but especially the poor, who adored and stuck with him throughout his political sojourn and thereafter.”

The ADC further called on Nigerians to remember Buhari for what he represented at his best: “integrity, humility, and a deep commitment to public service.”

“Let his memory be a mirror that reflects the personal ethics that we must continue to demand from leadership for generations to come,” the statement read.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), under which Buhari served two terms as President, has also shut down operations at its National Secretariat in Abuja.

In a notice issued by the party’s acting National Chairman, Bukar Dalori, the secretariat will remain closed from Monday, 14th July, and reopen on Thursday, 17th July 2025.

“We urge party faithfuls to use this period of national mourning for quiet reflection and prayers for the repose of the soul of our departed leader,” the party stated.

Former President Buhari passed away on Sunday afternoon at a private medical facility in London where he was undergoing treatment. The nature of the illness was not disclosed.

His former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the death in a brief statement: “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.”

In a related development, the Katsina State Government has announced that the late President’s remains will arrive in the state at noon on Tuesday, 15th July, ahead of his burial in his hometown of Daura later that day.

Governor Dikko Radda made the announcement on Monday after confirming arrangements for the burial, in accordance with Islamic rites.
