…Warn Against Marginalisation
Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the North-Central geopolitical zone have warned against what they described as the sustained marginalisation of their zone and the meddlesome intrusion of external forces into its political affairs.
a trend they say violates the principles of fairness, equity, and internal democracy within the party.
During an emergency meeting of prominent party figures from the zone held in Abuja on Wednesday which drew a distinguished attendance of serving and former National Assembly members, ex-Governors, former Ministers, respected members of the Party’s Board of Trustees (BOT), and State Party Chairmen from the North-Central, the leaders noted that the trend violates the principles of fairness, equity, and internal democracy within the party.
In a communique released after intense deliberations, signed by Chief Adakole Ijogi on behalf of the North-Central PDP Stakeholders, the leaders decried the widening disparity between the unity-driven political process in the South and the increasingly fractious atmosphere in the North.
They noted that on August 22, 2025, the Southern PDP Caucus had “successfully and transparently concluded the micro-zoning of its allocated National Working Committee (NWC) positions at a meeting in Lagos State,” a development they said showcased “discipline and cohesion.”
However, they lamented that the Northern flank of the party remains ensnared in deep divisions and “dangerous sentiments” fueled by external influences bent on destabilising the region’s internal harmony ahead of the all-important Elective National Convention.
After reviewing the state of the party and the quest for justice, the North-Central leaders arrived at several unanimous resolutions.
They urged the party’s Northern leadership to “as a matter of urgency” summon a Northern Caucus meeting to “facilitate genuine dialogue, resolve the lingering zoning dispute, and forge a united front” ahead of the convention.
The communique was unequivocal that “the position of the National Chairman of the PDP must be zoned to and remain in the North-Central Zone.” The stakeholders insisted that the demand stems from “a verifiable injustice,” recalling that “following the events of 2022, the North-Central Zone was unjustly not allowed to complete its constitutionally mandated tenure for the National Chairman position.”
They stressed that “correcting the anomaly is a fundamental requirement for justice and fair play,” adding that the zone is “poised to reclaim its mandate.”
The meeting also condemned “the actions of some individuals driven by personal interests who are poised to derail the upcoming Elective National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.”
The North-Central leaders reaffirmed their support for the 2025 National Convention Planning Committee led by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, declaring that “the Convention is a moving train that cannot be stopped by selfish ambitions.”
The forum expressed serious concern over what it termed “an orchestrated wave of defections,” warning Nigerians that it signals “a calculated descent into a one-party state — a prelude to democratic dictatorship.”
They, however, assured the public that despite the turbulence, “the PDP remains solid, resilient, and built on an enduring foundation.”
The communique restated that “as Nigeria’s only true legacy party, founded in 1998 and custodian of the nation’s democratic evolution, the PDP exists to serve all Nigerians — not a privileged few.”
The leaders reiterated that “the party’s ideals are rooted in service, not self-interest.”
They concluded with a strong caution to the PDP leadership in the North, declaring that the North-Central Zone will no longer tolerate any form of disregard or marginalisation.
“The people and leaders of the North-Central are united in their resolve,” they warned, “and will not hesitate to take all necessary and decisive actions should the zone continue to be treated with injustice.”
