The Kano State Hisbah Board has intervened to stop what it described as an alleged same-sex marriage ceremony, arresting 25 people in the operation.

According to the Board, the arrests took place on Saturday evening at an event centre on the Hotoro Bypass, in the Tarauni Local Government Area of the State.

Sheikh Dr Mujahid Aminuddeen Abubakar, Deputy Commander General (Special Operations) of the Hisbah Board, confirmed that the operation was triggered by an intelligence tip-off from a concerned resident.

He explained that the tip-off suggested that one Abubakar Idris was allegedly planning to marry another young man. Acting on that information, Hisbah operatives entered the venue and discovered the gathering under dim lighting conditions.

“Upon arrival, our personnel discovered a gathering of young men and women who appeared to be conducting a marriage ceremony,” he said.

He stated that 25 individuals were arrested during the raid — notably, 18 cross-dressers (identified locally as ’yan daudu) and seven women from various parts of the State, including Sheka, Yar Gaya, and Kofar Nasarawa.

All those detained have been taken into the custody of Hisbah. According to Dr. Mujahid, they will be charged in court once investigations are complete.

He appealed to parents and guardians to “instill sound moral values in their children” and encouraged members of the public to report “any suspicious activities” to Hisbah or other relevant authorities.

Dr Mujahid reiterated the Board’s commitment to promoting “a morally upright society” and to preserving Kano State’s reputation as a community guided by discipline and Islamic principles.
