The National Coordinator, Coalition of Northern Groups, Alh. (Comr) Jamilu Aliyu Charanci has identified drug abuse as the brain behind banditry, terrorism, Kidnapping and other social vices in the society.
Charanci, stated this while addressing gathering during a public lecture organised by Students Wing of the group, Adamawa State chapter held at the Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola.
The lecture has the theme: “Building Responsible Student Leadership, Combating Drug Abuse, Thuggery, Hate Speech and Campus Disunity Through Positive Values and Mentorship”.
The National Coordinator attributed the high rate of crime in the country to drug abuse and lack of responsible leadership.
He said: “We are in Adamawa not for an academic gathering or jamboree but to reshape values, characters, and to reshape responsibilities, because we believe our strength should be based on uniformity.
“Selection for leaders should be based on competence, capacity and capability to deliver and reject those that will use religion, ethnicity or region to divide them”.
Charanchi also called on them to emulate their forefathers who sacrificed for the unity of the country, stressing that Nigeria cannot progress without unity among the citizens.
In his speech, the chairman of the occasion, Dr. Usman Ahmad Dadah (Kaigama Jimeta) who is also the Adamawa State Chairman Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, stressed the need for people at all strata to imbibe the spirit of peace building, urged people to desist from taking hard drugs, noting that drug abuse is a cancer worm in the society.
Dadah said, “My dear students, please avoid social vices. Avoid drug abuse, causing crisis on the campus, thuggery, religious bigotry and other social vices bedeviling us on our campuses and our nation.
“As a former student activist, I cherish events that will add value to our students. The lecture is therefore apt and timely.
“I will indulge you all to pay attention to the issues to be discussed here. Please, make the best use of this rare opportunity. Listen attentively to the speakers, learn from them, have some takeaways, and utilise the knowledge received after the lecture”.
In his keynote address, the Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, represented by ASP A.I. Usman, who spoke extensively on THUGGERY AND SHILLA GANGSTERISM, commended organisers of the lecture, noting that it will create awareness and preventive engagement, aimed at educating students to make choices that protect their future and contribute positively to society.
“The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with sister security agencies and community stakeholders, remains committed to preventing and combating these crimes through: Intelligence-led policing, patrols and surveillance, arrest and prosecution of offenders,” he said.
Earlier in his welcome address, the state Coordinator of the group, Comr. Usman Bala Kundi explained that the event is a call to conscience, a platform for reflection, and a step towards transformation.
“Our campuses should be centers of learning, innovation, and unity, but are increasingly confronted with challenges such as drug abuse, violent conduct, hate speech, and disu These vices not only threaten academic excellence but also endanger the future of our youth and the peace of our society.
“This public lecture has therefore been carefully designed to address these pressing concerns by promoting responsible student leadership. We believe that when students are guided by positive values and supported through effective mentorship, they become agents of peace rather than instruments of chaos, builders of unity rather than promoters of division,” Kundi said.
Other speakers include a representative of the State Commander, NDLEA Aliyu Abubakar CN, Dr Mahdi Abubakar Abba, HOD Political Science, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, and Dr. Adamu Mallam Babikkoi, Coordinator PDE, Federal College of Education, Yola.
