The Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City, Edo State, has expelled two students captured in a viral video physically assaulting a fellow student.

In a statement issued on Friday, the school described the conduct displayed in the video as deeply troubling and inconsistent with the institution’s core values.

“Following an immediate investigation, the students responsible have been expelled from the school with immediate effect. Such conduct will never be tolerated within our school community,” the statement said.

The management added that the matter had been reported to the relevant authorities and assured that it was cooperating fully with ongoing investigations, noting that the students involved are minors.

“We are providing support to those affected and are working closely with their families to ensure the matter is addressed with the seriousness it deserves,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its position on student safety and discipline, the school said it operates a strict zero-tolerance policy against bullying, intimidation, harassment, cultism and any form of violence within its premises.

The disturbing footage, widely circulated on social media, shows two male students repeatedly attacking another student while a third student records the assault.

The exact date of the incident remains unclear, but the video has triggered public condemnation and renewed concerns about bullying in Nigerian schools.

Police React

The Nigerian Police Force has also reacted to the incident, urging the victim and his parents to formally report the matter to enable a full investigation.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that the command had seen the video and was ready to act once a complaint is filed.

“I have seen the video, and the only thing I can say for now is that the boy and his parents should come forward and make a complaint so that an investigation can begin,” Ikoedem added.

“Bullying is a criminal offence. No one is allowed to beat up and dehumanise someone like that. That is somebody’s child, irrespective of whatever crime he may have committed,” he said.

Police authorities have indicated that investigations would proceed in accordance with the law once a formal complaint is received.

Edo Government Launches Probe

Meanwhile, the Edo State Ministry of Education has expressed concern over the incident and announced the constitution of an investigative committee.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Edith Ebomoyi, said the government had set up a five-member panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.

“Following this disturbing development, the Ministry has immediately constituted a five-man investigative committee to thoroughly investigate the incident,” Ebomoyi said in a statement.

“The committee has been mandated to urgently unravel the circumstances surrounding the occurrence and identify all students found culpable,” the ministry said.

She added that disciplinary action would be taken against anyone found responsible, in line with regulations governing conduct in schools across the state.

“The Ministry will not tolerate acts of bullying, violence, or any form of misconduct that threatens the safety of students,” the statement read in part.

The ministry further assured parents, school authorities and the public that the government would ensure justice is served and steps taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
