Fresh attack by suspected gunmen on Ngbra Zongo community in the Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State has claimed the lives of no fewer than 13 persons, including three pregnant women and children.
Several people were also reportedly injured in the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, leaving residents in panic across the community.
According to some residents, the assailants stormed the area beeen midnight and 2:am shooting indiscriminately before attacking people with machetes and other dangerous weapons.
The Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Auta, who confirmed the incident, described the killings as tragic and condemnable.
“The incident as a horrific and inhuman act, the killing of defenseless citizens by terrorists is unacceptable and a grave assault on peace, security, and the collective conscience of the society.
“Security agencies should intensify surveillance and provide adequate protection for vulnerable communities due to recurring attacks on communities in Bassa Local Government Area and other parts of Plateau State,” Auta added.
He urged security operatives to apprehend those responsible for the killings and bring them to justice to prevent further attacks, noted that such repeated acts of violence against peaceful communities must be brought to an end.
A resident, Chigoji Rocku, confirmed that three pregnant women were among those killed during the attack.
Another resident, Philip Alanga, said the attackers moved from house to house, targeting innocent residents and forcing many families to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
“They came into the community around midnight and started shooting and hacking people to death. They moved from one house to another, attacking innocent people,” he said.
As of the time of filling this report, a mass burial has been conducted for those who lost their lives, and the injured are being treated at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH.)
The Plateau State Police Command is yet to issue any statement regarding the attack.
