NewsNigeriaPoliticsCourt to Rule on Jonathan’s Eligibility for 2027 Presidency May 26

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fixed May 26 to deliver judgment in a suit seeking to disqualify former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Justice Peter Lifu adjourned the matter for judgment on Monday after taking arguments from counsel to the plaintiff and the defendants.

The suit, filed by Jideobi, seeks to restrain Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential aspirant in the 2027 presidential race.

The plaintiff is also seeking an order stopping the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting, processing, or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.

At the heart of the case is the interpretation of provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), particularly Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3), and whether Jonathan remains eligible to seek the office again.

The legal dispute revives a long-running constitutional question over term limits for a president who completed the tenure of a predecessor before winning a fresh election.

Jonathan, who first assumed office in 2010 following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and later won the 2011 election, left power in 2015 after losing to Muhammadu Buhari.

His potential return bid has since generated debate among legal experts and political actors over the constitutionality of another run.
