A 15-year-old domestic worker has been rescued after allegedly spending many months locked inside a toilet at her employers’ residence in Abuloma, Rivers State.
The teenager, identified as Amarachi and said to be from Ebonyi State, was reportedly discovered after she cried out for help when the occupants of the house left.
Her cries reportedly drew the attention of neighbours, who alerted the police at the Abuloma Police Division. Police operatives subsequently responded to the distress call, rescued the girl and arrested the couple responsible for her confinement.
The teenager was said to have been subjected to severe neglect during the period she spent in the toilet, including being fed only once daily with leftover food.
The Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, while confirming the incident, said the Command received information on September 13, 2026, that a girl had allegedly been locked inside a bathroom by a 34-year-old man identified as Eze Nduibisi, and his wife, Blessing Simeon.
Agabe said the couple allegedly confined the girl because she was displaying signs of a mental disorder.
She said: “The Command is aware of the incident involving a 15-year-old girl, Joy, at Abuloma.
“On 13th September 2026, at about 1600hrs, the Abuloma Police Division received information that the girl had allegedly been locked inside a bathroom by Eze Nduibisi, aged 34, and his wife, Blessing Simeon, aged 31, reportedly on account of her displaying signs of mental disorder.
“Upon receipt of the information, police operatives promptly intervened and rescued the girl. Eze Nduibisi and his wife were subsequently arrested.
“The victim’s mother was contacted through her uncle, one Abbel Ude, aged 69, from Umuche, Ebonyi State. The family thereafter came to take the victim home for further care and medical attention.
“The matter is currently under investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and take appropriate action.”
The couple it was gathered remain in police custody as investigations continue, while the victim’s family has reportedly taken her home for further care and medical attention.
