A planned showdown of Seplat Petroleum Development Company by host Sapele indigenes is looming going by threats by the Chairman, Sapele Okpe Community Mr. Patrick Akamovba. Mr. Akamovba described the entire structure as short-changing qualified sons and daughters in strategic positions and other forms of marginalization against the Sapele community.
Addressing Journalists in Sapele , Mr. Akamovba stated that it was most disheartening for Seplat to violate its agreement with the host communities.
The oil and gas company, he pointed out, which started operations in 2010 has not actually benefitted qualified indigenes of sapele since its inception. He challenged the company to publish names of sapele indigenes in management positions of the company in national newspapers for the perusal of the public.
According to the community chairman, “we have made entreaties to Seplat Oil Company to address their wrong-doings against the host community, but they have failed to come to terms with the complaints against them.”
Sapele Okpe Community has observed the short-changing game by Seplat, especially which deliberately has not employed a single Okpe indigene in their management.
“Even the few direct staff in lower cadre of the company’s employment has been refused promotions while other Okpe indigenous contract staff and juicy positions are given to non-indigenes even with hundreds of qualified Okpes from the universities wallowing the street for employment “,the communities spokesperson said.
Unless an urgent meeting is rescheduled, Mr. Akamovba cautioned, “I will have no option than to drag Seplat to the Nigeria public and the London Stock Exchange for redress and as well ask the Federal Government to compel Seplat to implement in full, its statutory obligations to Sapele Community.”
