Wives of police officers serving in the northeast have asked the government to redeploy their husbands in order to prevent them from being widows.
The call was made in a protest in Jos, where the women, dressed in black attire, protested the killing of their husbands by the insurgents and alleged that no action was carried out by the government.
One of the protesters said some of the officers had overstayed in their places of assignment.
“Why are our husbands not being redeployed according to the terms of engagement? Some of them have overstayed in their places of assignment, yet they abandon them to their fate, making them easy preys to the terrorists who have sophisticated weapons.
“Many of them have been killed with the information kept secret from their families, while those who managed to be alive are not allowed to visit their families for many years.
“The government should have pity on us and save our husbands from avoidable death. That is why we are calling on the government to redeploy them before we all become widows,” a protester was quoted as saying.
The spokesman of the police in the state, Ubah Ogaba, said the police was aware, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Isaac Akinmoyede, was making plans to summon the women for a meeting aimed at resolving problems amicably.
The fight against insurgency in the northeast is a decade old and has claimed over 30 thousand lives. The West African Pilot had reported on the state of mental health of men of the Nigerian armed forces.
Meanwhile, last week, some soldiers have petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, alleging embezzlement by one of their top officials. They alleged that the top official siphoned their welfare and allowances and refused to pay cigarette allowances since January despite a signal from the Nigerian Army. However, the Nigerian Army has said it would investigate the allegations.
