The Co-Chairman, Kano state Taskforce on COVID-19,  and professor of infectious and tropical diseases Abdulrazaq Garba Habib has tested positive for COVID-19.

Professor Habib’s positive result was released on Wednesday and had since been admitted at the state isolation centre at Kwanar Dawaki.

Reports say that Habib, an epidemiologist,  who is actively involved in rapid response to all the confirmed cases in Kano, contracted the virus during clinical services, a senior member of the taskforce revealed in confidence.

Professor Habib participated in the initial characterization of a new emerging infection Corona Virus –Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (CoV-SARS) in Singapore.

Presently, he teaches modules on the immune response to infectious HIV/AID, tuberculosis, snakebite sepsis, parasite infection and typhoid fever at Bayero University, Kano.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine trained physicians directly involved in several clinical epidemiology studies, earning a globally certified award of excellence.

Following the followed the discovery of the status of the co-chair of the committee, Kano deputy governor Nasiru Gawuna, two commissioners and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s daughter have gone into self-isolation.

All six are members of the state task force on COVID-19, chaired by deputy governor Gawuna. They include Amina Umar Ganduje, health commissioner Aminu Tsanyawa, environment commissioner Kabiru Getso, and Imam Wada, secretary of the committee.

An inside source within the government confided that, “You know, since they have mingled with the co-chair, whose status is now known, the best for the rest members of the committee is to go for self-isolation.

‘’Their specimen have been taken for test, but their results are not out for them to know their status.

“We are praying that the results would turn negative. But I can confirm to you that virtually all members of the Kano task force on COVID-19 are now in self-isolation and are waiting for their results,” the source said.

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje had on 21st March, 2020  inaugurated the task force with the core mandate to curtail the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Kano as well as rendering effective management of the case.
