The Federal Government on Tuesday said that it is ready to increase its support for Kano State to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the highly populated state.

Dr. Olorunnibe Mamora, Minister for State for Health disclosed this in Abuja at a media briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19. He said the FG is worried by the increasing number of the COVID-19 cases in Kano.

The National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr. Sani Aliyu, who was also at the briefing said the taskforce was worried about the growing cases of the virus in Kano State.

He further commented on the recent multiple reported deaths in the state. The state government on Monday also said it was investigating the multiple death reported.

April 11, the first case of COVID-19 was recorded in Kano State. The index case was a retired ambassador who had recently traveled to the United Kingdom and was later diagnosed with the virus.

On Monday, Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 23 COVID-19 infected persons in the state. This increased the total number of coronavirus infected persons in the state to 59.

The spread of the virus was reported to have sped up as a result of the Jumaat service the index case attended in Kano.

Mamora, when expressing the concern of the FG about the spread of the virus in Kano State, said the population density could be compared to Lagos, the epicenter of the virus in the country.

In his words, “Part of what we will do is to increase the support for Kano. Kano and Lagos have the highest population and, naturally, we would be worried.”

He buttressed “What Lagos has is also what Kano has in terms of population, the density of population and activities, commercial and otherwise. So, we will need to do more of contact tracing, where we can, testing, isolation, and treatment.”
