The effort to put COVID-19 under control in Anambra State was given a boost with a donation of N1million by the Anambra State Association (ASA) Women in the United States of America. Dr. Anthonia Uche Umeh head ASA Women USA a nonprofit charity and humanitarian organization based in Washington, D.C.
During the presentation of the donation to the Anambra State Government in Awka through the Secretary to the State Government, Hon Tobe Chukwulobelu, the local coordinator of the ASA Women, Mrs. Umenweke Onyinye said that the donation aims to provide the government with support to combat the viral infection which is ravaging the globe and spreading in Nigeria.
One of the patrons of the association, who is also a former commissioner for information, Chief Maja Umeh, said the collaboration with the government at this challenging period was prompted by the state government’s role as a trustworthy partner to the organisation.
Chief Umeh praised Chief Willi Obiano for building one of the best oxygen plant in Nigeria in the state. He also called on the state government to assist the ASA Women USA to achieve the dream of establishing a world class cancer centre in Anambra.
However, Chief Maja urged security agencies to be sensitive, civil and personable in enforcing directives on COVID-19, adding that diplomacy should be adopted by security agencies when interacting with Nigerian citizens over COVID-19 order.
On his part, the former commissioner for health, Hon. Joseph Akabike said the donation was important to enable the government beef up morale in fighting the scourge of COVID-19.
Reacting to the gesture of the ASA Women USA, the Secretary to the State Government, Hon Tobe Chukwulobelu thanked the organisation for their kindness to the state. He described their action and enduring commitment to the health sector of Anambra State for over a decade as an exemplary and applaudable one.
