NewsNigeriaTeenager Dies, Many Become Homeless as Rainstorm Ruins Delta Communities

A rainstorm had killed a teenager, injured, and rendered over 500 residents homeless in the Iyede Kingdom in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State on Saturday.

The 18-year old deceased is a native of Ekreme in Otor-Iyede, he was standing outside the house when the thunderstruck and died as a result of the injuries sustained. Deceased father, Peter Ataregre claimed.  

The affected communities in the Iyede kingdom included Otor Iyede, Ekuigbo-Iyede, Ogewho, and Oghara-Iyede. Residents of these communities lamented the ruins caused by the rainstorm.

The rainstorm lasted for about two hours, several houses were destroyed, electric poles were not spare leaving the area in darkness.

Senior Special Assistance to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Youth Monitoring and Mentoring, who is also a community leader, Mr. Jonathan Umukoro said, “the rainstorm was a terrible one which destroyed several buildings including the Oghara Iyede Town Hall.”

According to him, the rain “destroyed over 50 houses. Most of our property had been destroyed. This is beyond our capacity and we call for help from relevant government agencies and well-meaning individuals.”

The chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Mr. Emmanuel Egbabor, who spoke with journalists on the incident, condoled with the deceased family and assured that he will immediately visit the area to ascertain the level of damage.
