Pandemonium broke out at Onikan area in Lagos on Sunday when a Policeman allegedly opened gunfire on his colleagues, killed one Sergeant, escaped in a police patrol vehicle to another location and made attempts to break into a property.
The policeman who was later identified by the Lagos Police Command as Inspector Monday Gabriel, was said to suddenly shoot at his colleagues. While some escaped uninjured, one Sergeant Felix Okagbo was killed.
The inspector escaped from the scene, shooting as he drove towards Third Mainland bridge. The Nation reported that the policeman drove to Akoka area in Yaba, where he made attempts to break into a compound, firing 30 rounds of bullets.
He was later restrained by men from Bariga Police Division and the Rapid Response (RRS) who responded to the distress call. He was disarmed and handcuffed while the rifle and vehicle were recovered, the police said.
In a statement by the Lagos Police Command spokesperson, Elkana Bala, the police inspector had been taken to the hospital for mental illness evaluation and that an evaluation would reveal the circumstances surrounding the Inspector’s behavior.
“The corpse of the deceased Sergeant is deposited in the mortuary for autopsy while the Inspector is taken to Police Hospital for medical examination as he presented signs of mental depression,” the Police PRO stated.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Hakeem Odumosu condoled with the family of the fallen policeman and ordered an investigation.
