Disturbed with the rising cases of rape across Nigeria, in 2019 over twenty pressure groups to include Media, Civil Society Organizations came together in Adamawa state and formed a coalition known as “Adamawa State Coalition Against Rape” (ACAR) with the sole aim to fight the monster rolling its ugly head in the society.

In September last year, the Coalition held a protest march to draw the attention of authorities concern on the need to take stringent punishment against the perpetrators of the act.

 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the coalition commemorated it’s one year anniversary which was held at the police roundabout Jimeta.

In her presentation, the convener Hajiya Asmau Joda lamented that despite the promise made by relevant stakeholders in Adamawa to checkmate rape, the evil act is on the increase and stressed the need for the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary to be proactive on the issue.

“Rape has been forbidden by Islam and Christianity; religious leaders should continue to preach against it until success is achieved”. She said

On his part, Head of Media of the coalition, Dr Muhammed Adamu Dodo said rapists are a nuisance in the society, and urged the Adamawa state government to come up with harsh punitive measures against perpetrators of the act as was done in other states like Ekiti, Kano, Kaduna and Nasarawa.

In their separate remarks, Chairman Widows Association, Adamawa state chapter  Mrs Hilda Mankanto, representative of Youth  Al’Amin Bobbo Muhammed, and the Coordinator HIV/AIDS prevention Adamawa state, Mrs Farah James noted that the increasing cases of rape in the society is frightening.

They observed that a culture of silence is contributing to the increasing cases, and called on victims of rape to speak out and demand justice.
