President Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday, congratulated the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on his victory at the governorship election in the state, which was held on Saturday.

Obaseki, who is the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), defeated the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the poll. Buhari is also a member of the APC.

According to a statement signed by the President’s Senior Special Assistance on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President commended the electoral process that saw the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring Obaseki winner.

In the statement titled, “President Buhari Commends Electoral Process in Edo State, Reiterates Commitment to Free and Fair Elections,” Shehu quoted Buhari as reiterating his commitment to credible elections in the country.

In the statement, the President was further quoted as encouraging Obaseki to “show grace and humility in victory.”

The President said, “My commitment to free and fair elections is firm, because, without free and fair elections, the foundation of our political and moral authority will be weak.

“I have consistently advocated for free and fair elections in the country because it is the bedrock of true democratic order.

“Democracy will mean nothing if the votes of the people don’t count or if their mandate is fraudulently tampered with.”

He commended the high level of responsibility shown by the people of the state, the political parties and security agencies.
