The Bauchi State rural water supply agency (RUWAS), to engage qualified people living with disabilities as apprentices and interpreters during the implementation of water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes in the State.
The Permanent Secretary of the agency, Engr. Garba Babaji disclosed when officials of the deaf and sign language interpreters association paid him a visit to mark the International Day for the Deaf in Bauchi
Babaji explained that the government was not unaware of the potentials of people living with disabilities, including the deaf and the dumb.
“RUWASA will engage some of you that are technically equipped to serve as apprentices and interpreters during hygiene behavior training to make the message clearer,” he said
Engr. Babaji promised that the malfunctioned water facility at the school for the physically challenged would be rehabilitated in line with the agency’s social responsibility to the Community soonest.
Earlier, the Chairman of the State branch of the National Association of sign language interpreters, Comrade Sale Adamu lauded RUWASA and WaterAid Nigeria for adopting an inclusive approach in the implementation of WASH programmes on Covid-19 and Cholera awareness.
Adamu however implored the State Government not to see disability as a barrier to employment, stressing as people with physical challenges have the potential to interpret key messages into sign language for the benefit of their members in the state.
