Taraba State Deputy Governor Haruna Manu has lamented the massive destruction of public and private property in the state, calling on religious leaders in the state to always preach peace among their adherents.
Manu made the remark, while receiving the leadership of Taraba State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and its counterparts Muslim Council of Nigeria (MCN) in his office on behalf of Governor Dickson Ishaku, explained that both Christianity and Islam encourages peaceful coexistence.
He called on the religious bodies to encourage their followers who participated in looting of public and private property to return them as government would go after them.
In their separate remarks, State Chairman of (CAN), Isaiah Magaji Jirapye and the State Secretary of the Muslim Council of Nigeria (MCN) Chindo Muhammad condemned in strong terms the actions of the youth and reiterated their commitment to support and cooperate with the government in recovery of the stolen items.
Meanwhile, the two religious bodies in the state at a joint press briefing held at the Muslim Council of Nigeria Secretariat Jalingo described the action of the youth as uncalled for and appealed to them immediately return the looted items to appropriate authority in their own interest.
They commended the Taraba State Government for taking proactive measures to stop the escalation of the destruction and equally appreciated the security agencies and the Vigilante Groups for their roles in curtailing further looting and destruction of public and private property in Jalingo and other parts of the State.
The groups pledged to sensitize parents and guardians to monitor activities of their children in order not to involve in crime and criminality.
