The International Criminal Court (ICC) has commenced conducting a preliminary investigation into the recent #EndSARS protests in Nigeria.

The report was broadcasted by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on Wednesday.

The office of the ICC prosecutor in a statement, earlier said, it had received information on alleged crimes.

It added that the examination will “assess whether the legal criteria for opening an investigation under the Rome Statute are met.”

For weeks, crowd of Nigerians youths took the streets on major cities in the country to demonstrate and protest against police brutality and extrajudicial killings but it led to crackdown.

Rights group, Amnesty International said security force opened fire on unarmed protesters, killing and injuring number of persons. Both the army and the police have denied the allegation by the Amnesty.

However, the ICC said it would make findings of the preliminary examination public.
