Traders transacting business in farm produce in Lau main Market, headquarters of Lau Local Government council of Taraba State have decried the increase of prices of foodstuffs despite the agrarian nature of the area.

Findings in the market show that a bag of Maize which was sold at ten thousand naira (N10, 000) a few months ago now attracts eighteen thousand naira (N18, 000), a bag of Guinea-corn is sold for sixteen thousand naira (N16, 000) as against ten thousand naira (N10, 000) while a bag of Rice was sold thirteen thousand against ten thousand naira.

Despite the price increase, the commodities are in short supply in the market compared with their availability four months ago during the peak of the harvesting season.

Misba’u Danladi, Chairman Traders Association Lau Branch attributed the trend activities of hoarders and climatic change experienced by farmers in 2020 which affects farm produce.

“When the Federal made pronouncements on borders opening there was change in prices of foodstuffs.

“Government should provide incentives to farmers to boost their farming activities; most farmers generate their income from farming.

“People on the other hand should engage in dry season farming to help curb food scarcity’, he said.

Also commenting, a grain seller Lami Bitrus attributed to low harvest due to havoc caused by flood on some farms last year, noted that speaks for the low level of farm produce brought to the market.

She called for government intervention through the establishment of a price control board that would checkmate the activities of hoarders and sanitize the system.
