JOS — The Northern Governors Forum has condoled with the people of Auchi Kingdom, Government and people of Edo, and the Nigerian media industry over the death of Prince Tony Momoh, on Monday.
The late Momoh passed on at the age of 81.
The Chairman of the forum and governor of Plateau, Simon Lalong, in a condolence message issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Makut Macham, on Tuesday, in Jos, described the death of Momoh as a great loss to the nation.
He said the deceased, who had made an impact in various spheres of the polity, was a man of vast experience, having served as a teacher, before making his mark as one of Nigeria’s most versatile journalist, administrator, politician, and lawyer.
He eulogised the former Minister of Information and Culture, describing him as a giant in the Nigerian Media industry, who played a great role in promoting freedom of the press.
Lalong also noted that the deceased played a critical role in opening up the media space, leading to the emergence of many media outlets.
The chairman also described him as a political strategist and mobiliser who, at various times, worked with politicians from across the country to advocate for improvement in political processes and governance.
According to the governor, Momoh’s emergence as the chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the role he played in the subsequent formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had accorded him a special place in Nigerian’s political history.
Lalong lauded his leadership skills and achievements as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, University of Jos , saying that during his tenure, he facilitated improvement in academic performance and general development of the institution, which is now a leading university in Nigeria and Africa.
The governor urged his family to be consoled with his testimony of honesty, hard work and patriotism, while praying to God to grant his soul eternal rest.
The late Momoh, who started his journalism career in 1962 at the Daily Times, was the Minister of Information from 1986 to 1990.
He was until his death, a member of the APC.
