ABAKALIKI — The Ebonyi Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Charles Akpuenika has hailed Gov. David Umahi’s pronouncement on the eventual formation of the state’s new football teams.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Umahi while declaring open the on-going state’s #EndSARS youth summit, announced that the process of forming both male and female teams would begin from the end of March 2021.

Akpuenika in an interview with NAN on Saturday in Abakaliki, described the pronouncement as thrilling, noting that it would finally ensure the actualisation of both teams.

“The process would actually commence with King David and Queen Rachael football competitions to be competed for by the 24 state constituencies of the state.

“Players selected from the male competition would be merged with the state’s team billed to represent the South East Zone in the male football event of the forthcoming National Sports Festival.

“The players will be made to undergo vigorous training programmes where successful ones would form the core of the state’s new male football team,” he said.

The commissioner added that even though the state did not qualify for the female football event of the sports festival, outstanding female footballers would be merged with those selected from the Queen Rachael competition.

“The same process would also be applied in selecting players for the state’s new female football team,” he said.

He assured football fans in the state that the glory days of football would soon return as the governor’s would not renege on the pronouncement.

“We have organised several football and other sports competitions since the administration’s inception which includes the Akubaraoha unity cup, Divine Mandate Super Cup, David Umahi Tertiary Institutions Games among others.

“We pledge to sustain these competitions to continue churning budding talents who would represent the state in various regional and national competitions.

Akpuenika urged youths to effectively utilise the gains of the #EndSARS summit to be useful to the society and become future leaders.

“The present administration has empowered youths through various economical initiatives, ensured their election and appointment into various political offices among other self-enhancing policies,” he said.

NAN reports that Ebonyi has no team in any cadre of football competition in the country since the disbandment of Ebonyi Angels and Ebonyi Queens football clubs in 2007.
