President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mallam Abubakar Nuru Fikpo as the substantive Director-General, National Directorate of Employment (NDE).

According to a statement by the Presidency on Tuesday, Mallam Fikpo has held the position in an acting capacity before his appointment.

The statement which was signed by President Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, also stated that Buhari has approved the appointment of Comrade Issa Aremu, as the Director of the National Institute for Labour Studies (NILS).

Comrade Aremu has been a notable Trade Unionist, who has risen through the ranks in the hierarchy of the Nigeria Trade Union.

The appointments, which are meant for a period of four years, took effect from May 18, 2020.

The NDE was predicated on the effects of the economic recession of the ’80s which led to a drastic reduction in capacity utilization and consequent outright closure of industries in Nigeria. Its core values include training, empowerment and skill acquisition for Nigerians.

While NILS is to provide workers’ education, pursuant to this mandate, the institute is involved in several activities in the areas of training, research, education, publication and consultancy.
