YOLA — In order to sanitize the Journalism profession and eliminate quacks in the system, the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Adamawa State Council under the leadership of Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan has constituted a screening committee with a mandate to screen all registered practicing Journalists in the state.

The committee which has ten days to screen all registered members in the nine chapels in the state has since swung into action with the screening of Journalists working with the Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation ABC Yola, and Pulaaku F.M Yola.

The committee is expected to conclude its assignment on the 19th August, 2021, and submit its report to the state council for implementation of its findings.

Mallam Bashir Mallum Liman, the Director News, Adamawa Television Corporation ATV Yola, who heads the committee, said the aim of the exercise is to authenticate genuine registered Journalists practicing in Adamawa.

“This exercise is not a witch-hunt; we are only doing it to find out the authentic members of NUJ who are practicing Journalism in Adamawa as required by the ethics of the profession.”

“It is advisable for those who have no requisite qualification to obtain it and then follow the due process to practice Journalism according to the ethics of the profession.” He added.

Liman thanked members for cooperating with the committee, expressed hope that the exercise will be a huge success.

“What I have seen on the ground is an indication we are having 100% support and cooperation from members both socially and morally, if somebody comes in, he might thought it is a screening from the government, but it is a union affair,” he said.

Some members, who appeared before the committee expressed satisfaction, noted that screening is timely as it reveals the authentic members of the profession in the state.

They lamented that it is disheartening that nowadays quacks usually outnumbered genuine Journalists covering an event.
