NNEWI — The Students and staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi had decried the ongoing Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD)’ s strike. They said they are at a great loss as the boycotting action had robbed them of academic and practical knowledge.

Worse still, the patients are on the receiving end because there’s an unavailability of doctors to treat their ailments.

Below were their pathetic submissions during their interactions with The West African Pilot News reporter:

A College of Health Science and House Officer doctor Dr. V. Nnalue said: “The strike has adverse consequences because most effective works in the hospital are been done by the resident doctors. The emergency situation is appalling because the doctors that are supposed to give attention to patients are on strike.

The government has failed to do the needful thereby exposing doctors to series of untold hardships. Doctors have families and themselves to cater for. It is devastating that researches are going to be on hold which poses challenges to cure for new diseases because Doctors are closer to God and man. It’s painful that Nigerian doctors are underpaid, they are been paid #5000 as hazard allowance, the management slashes their salaries, and the aftermath of these actions results in brain drain. I plead that the government should quickly provide incentives that would be a source of encouragement to doctors.”

A student nurse from College of Nursing Science, Amichi, Mr. Nwaka contributed: ” We are here for clinical experience. We do come to NAUTH, Nnewi to have our practicals as student nurses. The NARD strike has effects on the patients and students because through the patients,  the students learn to know and get acquainted with disease conditions and how to handle them when encountered in the future as a staff nurse. Most of the patients are not attended to, they are sent elsewhere. Those in the wards are not properly taken care of.

“We are clinical students, we live in the hospital and most of what we do are clinical base because we work with patients and doctors. Due to the NARD strike, we lack patients on whom we perform our practicals on. The consultants are overwhelmed with the situation. The attention is not optimum, it will affect our performances in our exams. NARD is fighting for us because we will soon become doctors. If they did not succeed in it, it will affect us adversely. I want the government to grant their requests. The government should help us to work for God and humanity. ”  a 500 Level Medical Student named Nneoma submitted.

According to Sharon, “It has a massive impact on my level now because if you know the scheme of work and how it works, 5th level is basically clinical, we are in the wards and clinics. The major workforce in the hospital is the ones on strike. As we speak, they’re no patients in the hospital. It’s very sad, this country! what can we do? we are just practicising with ourselves instead of patients.

The government should know that healthcare is essential, they should have it in mind that healthcare is not a  second option. Good health is wealth, I don’t understand why the Nigerian government is making its citizens suffer. They should listen to the plight of the resident doctors, they are not asking for too much, if you know how house officers overwork themselves sometimes, they do 72 hours non-stop, 3 days shift non-stop to ensure they serve humanity. Government should do the needful.”

It’s a worrisome situation. I wish this will end sooner for the sake of the innocent patients who need attention. Nice article!
