ENUGU — Gradually, normalcy is returning back in the streets of states in the South East of Nigeria as people are seen on the roads and shops opening up for the day’s activities.

The earlier announcement of a one-week sit-at-home starting from 5th of November, 2021, and possible fear of the unknown kept people indoors despite a message cancelling the order attributed to Emma Powerful.

The message had enjoined all ‘Biafrans’ and residents of ‘Biafra’ to go about their lawful duties without fear of any molestation.

IPOB attributed the change of mind to the intervention of elders, traditional and religious leaders in the region and consideration of several appeals by persons especially women who earn their living based on their daily economic activities.

Many considered the message cancelling the order as handiwork of detractors and complied totally on Friday the first day the weeklong order was meant to start; all forms of economic activities in the five states in South East were crippled, street shops, markets, motor parks were all shut down till Friday evening when the authenticity of the news was ascertained.

However, on the second day of the scheduled one-week sit-at-home, many street shops were sighted open and individuals seen going about their personal businesses; even some big departmental shops and malls are open for business.

Report from a businesswoman in Enugu revealed that while the markets are open, buyers are nowhere to be found.

In a telephone conversation, the woman who sells fabrics in Ogbete Main market Enugu said, “Although the market is open, most individual’s shops are closed and no buyers; it could be due to the fact that many had panic bought their household needs on Thursday in anticipation of a weeklong shut down.”

Mr. Izuchukwu a public servant said, “Abakpa market (located in Enugu East Local Government area) is a beehive of activities as shops are opened to business and end users seen; more tricycles (Keke) are on the road today than yesterday and I believe that by Monday, normalcy would have returned as many will believe and truly understand that the sit-at-home order is called off.”

All over the states in the South East region, people are seen going about their businesses today unlike the first day the cancelled order; except Anambra state because of ongoing gubernatorial election.

Mrs. Ifeoma, a Federal Government civil servant confirmed this via a telephone conversation. “Aba in Abia state is cool. There is no mayhem and everybody went about their businesses today as usual. The weeklong sit-at-home has been cancelled.”
