ENUGU — The 2022 New Year day being Saturday resulted in the Federal Government of Nigeria declaring the 1st Monday of the year as a day off work, hence Monday 10th of January, 2022 became the 1st working Monday of the year.

During the Christmas holidays, the Monday sit-at-home order was not observed as diverse events were fixed all the days of the week.

But today, being the first working Monday, residents went about their business as against the sit-at-home order but were forced to close shops by the sporadic gunshots in the different axis of the Enugu metropolis.

Suspected hoodlums shot sporadically to awaken and ensure residents’ full compliance to the Monday sit-at-home order in the South-East of Nigeria; this caused pandemonium as people ran helter-skelter in fear for their lives.

Business premises, Federal secretariats, petroleum filling stations that had opened up for economic activities at that time scuttled to close shops for safety as the hit was experienced at different parts within the Enugu metropolis;

There were reports of sporadic shootings at Topland Amechi-Awkunanaw and Nowas Filling station Abakpa area, snatching and burning of a Toyota Sienna vehicle and a tricycle at Umueze and Agbani axis of Nkanu West LGA of the State.

An eyewitness who is a bus driver revealed that the gunmen, were heavily armed and came in three vehicles; a sienna Mini Van, a Highlander SUV and a Lexus SUV and shot sporadically at Garriki-Topland axis.

Shootings were also reported at the Holy Ghost-Ogbete main market axis causing traders, drivers and passengers to flee for their lives.

Reacting to the security situation, the Nigerian Police Force confirmed the security threats but calls on residents of the state to go about their lawful businesses without fear of intimidation or harassment, as Police and other Security Operatives, have been duly deployed to thwart the untoward activities of the miscreants in the State.

A statement released on the official handle of the Nigerian Force Enugu state Command, assures citizens of Enugu metropolis and the State in general, of collaboration of the Police with other Security Agencies to keep the untoward situation under control.

Driving around the city at about 2:30pm, no business premise or institution was open for business; motor parks, malls, Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, and Petroleum Filling stations were all closed with few vehicles seen on the road.
