According to the National Bureau of statistics’ Poverty and inequality report of 2019, nine of the 10 poorest states are from Northern Nigeria, Ebonyi, a southeast state is the only exception.

Sokoto topped the list with a poverty level of 87.73 percent followed closely by Taraba at 87.72 percent and Jigawa at 87.02 percent.

Children are living in one of the most perilous times in the country as recessions, debt burden, income inequality, displacement, terrorism, and armed conflict continue to thrive. More children are pushed into deprivation and reduced access to necessities.

Nigeria is home to the highest number of out-of-school children and the highest number of people living in extreme poverty. The country has the second-highest burden of stunted children in the world, with a national prevalence rate of 32 percent of children under five.
