JOS — The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has launched a bottled water and beverage factory in Jos.

The University of Jos Academic Staff Cooperative Investment company Limited (UJASCICL) bottled water and beverage factory located at Dong community of Jos North Local Government Area of the state was commissioned by ASUU National President, Prof. Victor Osodeke on Thursday.

Speaking at the commissioning, Dr Lazarus Maigoro, chairman of the University of Jos ASUU Chapter said the project was a brainchild of its Cooperative Investment Company Limited.

He stated that the factory has provided employment opportunities for over 25 persons from the host community.

He further explained that the initiative was to tell Nigerians that the union is not just about strikes, but concerned with the development of the Nigerian society.

“This event is very important in the life of ASUU in UNIJOS,” Maigoro said.

“You will recall that in 2020, while ASUU was on strike, we constructed and furnished a twin lecture theater and donated to the university.

“What we are doing today is just to meet the social needs of the society by providing water and other beverages at affordable prices and to also create jobs.

“As we speak, we have provided direct employment to 25 members of this community where this factory is domiciled.

“This goes to show that ASUU is not just concerned about going on strikes, but the growth, development, and wellbeing of the society.”

In his remarks, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, applauded ASUU for the initiative and assured the union of the commitment of the University towards providing the enabling environment to advance their welfare.

He declared that bottled water has become the official water for the University and called on the neighbouring communities to patronize the factory.
