ColumnsFiction & PoetryOf Love and of Years ― Reviving Love in Memories

One night of love is better than 10 years of scorn

One night of warmth is better than 10 years of touch

One night of still is better than 10 years of beef

One night of peace is better than 10 years of fist

One night of hug is better than 10 years of hurt

One night of clap is better than 10 years of slap

One night of dance is better than 10 years of pounce

One night of humour is better than 10 years of horror

One night of succour is better than 10 years of murmur

One night of closeness is better than 10 years of nearness

One night of heartbeat sinks deeper than 10 years of drumbeat

True,

one night could s-t-r-e-t-c-h into years, I bet you wish

but for the nastiness of years.

Like a con artist,

it accompanies the integrity of love

but resists commitment,

could forsake its bargain of time and season.

With its face set as a flint,

it looks away in times of need.

It feels indebted to no one

even after reaping the fruit of your labour.

It’s proud and keeps you in the prayer house.

Like a lottery,

it welcomes millions of believers but favours a few.

It is smart to dangle the glitters of the future but cunning

to conceal the pain of abruption.

Yet

Two celestials outsmarts its plague-

the heart and the mind.

The mind cheats the eyes,

the heart beats the fact.

Love is revived in memories.

The mind embalms with scents of love

The heart preserves in hopes of joy

This ash of flesh is retained for love

if you savoured every moment of the night and stars

(not worried about the years.)

The mind engraves on the heart what is forever.

With gratitude you breathe

though the tears of wishes flow.
