ABUJA — The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi says it is nobody’s turn to be president in 2023.
The presidential hopeful said this at the ongoing two-day retreat organised by the LP in Abuja.
Obi, who is the special guest of honour at the leadership retreat for national officers, trade unions, and the party’s candidates, stressed that the upcoming general elections should not be based on ethnicity, religion, or by turn.
According to him, the 2023 polls should be based on character, trust, and competence.
“Next year’s elections will not be based on ethnicity. We have had it before; it would not be on religion,” the former Anambra State governor said.
“There is no place that Christians buy things cheaper; there is no place that Muslims buy things cheaper.
“It will not be by turn, it is nobody’s turn. It must not be by connection. The election next year must be based on character and trust; it must be based on competence.”
Obi’s comment, though not directed at anyone, appears to be a jibe at the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu.
Tinubu had in June during a press conference in Ogun State used the phrase ‘Emi lokan’, a Yoruba expression meaning ‘it’s my turn, to emphasise that while he had been instrumental in the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as president in 2015, he is next in line to succeed President Buhari in 2023.
